ABOUT THE SERIES

Spooks is the nickname for MI5.

Obviously the term is used for anyone involved in the clandestine world and has been for many decades. However, in this context, it is used in this context it is used to represent the people who make up Section D of MI5. The adventures that we are allowed to follow all deal with that group with some members playing more strident a role but all of them important.

Heading the organization is Sir Henry James Pearce, KBE, a man named 'Harry' who was born in 1953 making him 41 when he took over running the section in 1994 and 49 when we first meet him in 2002. He comes to his leadership more than honestly due to having been a field operative for many years, including a stint seconded to MI6. His time in Section D started around 1980 and he saw regular advancement over the next decade. Pearce is currently divorced having once been married to an English teacher named Jane who bore him two children before they separated a couple years before his final promotion.

The majority of the field work falls upon these operatives:

Zoe Reynolds: Intelligence Officer. Born in 1975, a white female, she stands 5'7 with short-ish blonde hair, she is a specialist in linguistics who "Zoe came to MIS straight from university and she was a valuable member of the team - both as a desk officer and in the field. An error of judgement in an undercover operation cost Zoe her career."

Tom Quinn: Senior Intelligence Officer. Born in 1971, a white male, he stands 6'1 with short-ish brown hair, he "had a distinguished career m MI5 before his loyalty was questioned in a complicated sting operation. He never really recovered from this and later lost his way on an operation after asking some serious moral questions about the nature of the job. He has now been decommissioned from the service."

Danny Hunter: Junior Intelligence Officer. Born in 1976, a black male, he stands 5'10 tall with very short black hair, he "joined MI5 as his first permanent job after dropping out of university. He was a valued member of Section D, working particularly closely alongside Zoe Reynolds and Tom Quinn, before he was shot dead in a hostage situation."

Adam Carter: Senior Intelligence Officer. Born in 1972, a white male, he stands 6'2" tall with short-ish brown hair, he "came to MI5 on short-term loan during a successful eight-year tenure at MI6. He was subsequent y made a full-time employee, leading Section D operations duties following the retirement of Tom Quinn. Carter's laid-back, easy-going charm belies a ruthless dedication to the service's aims. Carter lost his wife, Fiona, who was also an M15 officer, on operation in 2005."

Ruth Evershed: Research Officer. Born in 1970, a white female, she stands 5'4" tall with shoulder-length brown hair. She "was seconded to MI5 from GCHQ before her contract was made permanent. She provides excellent back¬ up research for the team in Section D. She has also made occasional forays into the field as her confidence grows. Her enthusiasm and loyalty are particularly commendable although her commitment to the job leaves her with little time for a social life."

Zafar Younis: Junior Field Officer. Born in 1977, a white male, he stands 6' tall with short black hair, he "joined MIS in May 2005 after almost three years on the North African desk at MI6. He's quick-witted and confident, working particularly well together with Adam Carter."

Malcolm Wynn-Jones: Senior Technical Officer. Born in 1958, a white male, he stands 6' tall with very short brown hair, he "joined MIS in 1990 after an early career in the Home Office and a 5-year stint in the private sector. He heads up the technical section, providing valuable background support on all major operations."

MY COMMENTS

I did not watch enough of this television show back when it was on. Straight up truth. I watched some of the earlier episodes but then lost track of it and never caught up. That was my bad and I am the one paying for it because obviously enough other people did not make my mistake, such that the series got renewed several times and a whole lot of episodes are available. I hope some day to be able to rectify that error of mine.

I liked the fact that this was an ensemble piece. There were several main characters who got repeated spotlights but no one person dominated the show which is something I appreciated. I did find I was especially alert, though, whenever Peter Firth, playing Harry Pearce, was on. The actor can grab a scene and hold it, letting others play around him.

Brilliant show.
