ABOUT THE SERIES

Jamie Fond is an agent with M.O.T.H.E.R.

What that acronym stands for is a mystery. In fact just about everything about the agency and the agent is a mystery. This is not on purpose, mind you; just a product of my not yet having gotten hold of a copy of the collection of graphic adventures about Fond.

The blurb on the cover of that collection makes this statement: "A deadly secret agent just walked by in a mini skirt! Is this a disguise or ... or what?" It then tells us it is "introducing Jamie Fond".

So, we conclude that Fond is the agent.

We also conclude from the attractive illustration that the mystery about Fond and M.O.T.H.E.R. goes even further.

Two very shapely females are closely gathered up near the fellow we assume is Jamie Fond. One is a beautiful dark haired woman in a frilly outfit similar to what a showgirl might wear. The other is a shorter but still luscious blonde who is wearing a tantalizing short short green frock. Both women seem especially happen to be with him - said glee being a tad diminished by the fact that the taller of the two is holding a very nasty looking knife ready to plunge into his chest while the shorter is holding a bomb with a lit fuse while also dropping something into a martini glass that the taller woman is offering Fond. The mystery is somewhat self-explanatory.

And there is yet another mystery regarding Fond himself. He is shown to be a tall, very thin man dressed in a frilly white dress shirt with a purple cravat and super skin-tight pants. His hair is poof-ed up in a pompadour. He might be wearing make-up as well, though that could be ultra-embarrassment.

Is Fond gay, as the picture would suggest? Is he shy around the ladies or just uncomfortable for another reason? Why are these women so pleased to be apparently able to meet his demise?

So many mysteries!

MY COMMENTS

It is important to remember that this series of short stories is a satire. They make fun of lots of things, especially the whole macho male spy. The tales poke fun at other things, too, but it is Fond that catches the brunt of things.

The neat twist this series presents is the use of a half dozen of the popular spy series/books in the era. James Bond, Alex Leaman, and others. Including, and this is a hoot-in-a-hoot, the Man from O.R.G.Y. which was a satire already. That's pretty nervy, if you asked me, which, of course, you didn't.
